Frequently asked
Straight answers to common questions about requirements, cost, and coverage.
Standard California homeowners insurance generally does not cover damage caused by flooding. Flood coverage is usually purchased separately. Homeowners policies may cover some other kinds of sudden water damage, but the source and cause of the water control the analysis. Review both policies and ask the insurer about the specific situation.
California does not require every homeowner to carry flood insurance. A federally regulated or federally backed lender generally requires it for a secured building in a Special Flood Hazard Area, and other lenders may require coverage based on their own risk rules. A property owner can also choose coverage without a lender requirement.
An atmospheric river is a long, narrow region that carries concentrated water vapor through the atmosphere. When a strong or stalled system reaches California, it can produce intense or prolonged rain. Flooding can follow when rivers rise, soil is saturated, drainage is overwhelmed, or runoff moves rapidly across steep or fire-affected terrain.
Standard homeowners insurance generally excludes flooding caused by rising surface water. Review the policy language and compare separate flood coverage for the property.
